Finding the Appalachian Spirit - Writing About the Mountains

My husband and I recently took a quick trip back to the Appalachian mountains in Western North Carolina, where I was raised. My ancestors have had a homestead property here since the Revolutionary War, and my mom and I are working on a book about Appalachian culture which was really the point of this trip. We wanted to find some inspiration and dig through my Great Grandmother's documentation on the genealogy of our family.

It was wonderful and beautiful and relaxing and I feel so inspired moving forward with this project. Whenever I see those ridges driving in from wherever I've travelled or wherever I'm living, it always feels like coming home.

I want to acknowledge that this land is the traditional territory of the Great Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee people lived there for thousands of years before any Europeans ever set foot on this land. Great Cherokee Nation was once the largest of all southern tribes, with an estimated population of 25,000 prior to the arrival of Europeans.
